Update on Kyle Korver's facebook page for Mason's ramp..

If you have followed our blog long you would know that last summer the Kyle Korver Foundation selected Mason (and our family) to be one of the families that they would provide a wheelchair ramp for.  After a lot of work from a lot of amazing people we are making progress!  It's been a long journey and still isn't complete, but it's sure getting close!  We are so grateful for all of the work people have done to make this possible for our family!  It looks amazing and I will go take a few pics to post, but here is the story that they posted on their website and facebook page.  Here are the links if you want to see it 'live'!!

Have you ever pondered the wonder of a flower’s beauty? How it is credited to the work of soil, something seen as “broken?” One definition of soil is “a place or condition providing the opportunity for growth or development.” Mason Shaw, six-year-old son of Kerry and Spencer Shaw, is the “soil” to many he comes across. Though others perceive him as broken, he has an amazing ability to draw beauty from others, because of who he is and what he has overcome. “He brings out the best side of people,” his mother Kerry said.

Mason is six years old and has Cerebral Palsy. He survives legal blindness and deafness, has Quadriplegia, a chronic lung disease, Pulmonary Hypertension, temperature irregularity, and has a g-tube that feeds him through the stomach. His list of his diagnoses is 30 or more.

Challenge number one was day one. Beginning with his premature birth at 27 weeks, Mason was born with a rare and severe genetic skin condition, Congenital Lamellar Icthyosis. The doctors doubted he would live through his first week. In his newborn pictures, his skin was pulled as-tight-as-could-be over his entire body. This caused him to be fire-engine-red and extremely shiny. To the doctor’s surprise, Mason battled and overcame his first almost-impossible odds. Kerry and Spencer were unable to hold him for the first five weeks, but after four long, rollercoaster, excruciating months in the Intensive Care Unit, they brought him home to meet his older brother Ethan.

Mason and 8-year-old Ethan will soon be younger brothers of their adopted 16-year-old Ukrainian sister Victoria and they have been older brothers together to adopted 2-year-old Ezra. Kerry and Spencer have no doubt these new children will bloom where they are planted, nurtured in part by the soil of Mason’s can-do spirit. “If someone in the family needs comfort or love, he is always there to give it. He is happy and charming, easy to like, innocent and strong,” Kerry said. She refers to Mason as their “angel,” and in the front room of the Shaw home is a display of that belief. A framed photo of Mason says, “Most people only dream of angels. We have held them in our arms.” She identifies her motherhood to him as “the greatest thing in the world.”

Kerry also explained the realities of life with Mason’s disabilities. A quote that she hangs on to during the harder days is one that her neighbor, who was dying of cancer, once shared: “If we hung our troubles on a line, you’d choose yours and I’d choose mine.” She and Spencer continue to painfully endure letting go of the “dream family” they once shared in their hearts. When they first wed, they did not imagine they would have a child with as many medical challenges, or that they would ever adopt. Neither of these was in the plan. Family events like hiking or vacations are slim-to-none, especially as Mason is getting heavier and more of a challenge to mobilize. “It is the freedom to go places that I miss,” said Kerry. “Even if it is just going to the grocery store, the ramp will free us in many ways.”

The ramp will allow Mason to sit outside on the deck in his wheelchair in the summertime while his siblings play in the pool, whereas before he was stuck inside. He will be able to use his chair in the house, which will permit him to sit at the dinner table with everyone else. “We have never planned ahead with Mason. Every doctor’s visit has left us hoping for at least six more months with him. It will be really nice to have something more permanent,” Kerry said. The thought that ran through her mind when she saw Mason wheeling down the ramp for the first time was one word: “liberation.”

Still No News...

As far as our adoption news goes.. There isn't really anything to report news wise.  Sad.  Our submission date for the Ukrainian government to review our dossier was Monday.  I don't really know what I was thinking by assuming that we would get some kind of idea of when our SDA appointment date would be within a day or so of the submission date, but I did.  Lesson learned, don't assume anything when you are adopting Internationally.  They told us that we should have a date by early next week.  We'll see.  We were told in January that an early submission date in February would mean that we would possibly travel by the last week of February.  That seems to be coming up faster than I would like with no idea of when we should expect to leave, but hey, what's a little more stress right now?!

I would like to try to express how overwhelmingly amazing it has been to have such support from friends and strangers in this huge adventure.  We have had donations of all kinds to help us raise the money that it will take to get there as well as pay for the adoption process.  Our master plan of credit back fired when we were told that we need to travel with cash and so many amazing people have donated through this blog as well as mailing checks, etc.  Both of our work places are being very supportive.  Spencer's work is gathering donations as well as hosting an auction next week to raise money for our adoption.  I am a tax preparer and my work has offered to let me prepare friends and families taxes for free - but accept donations for the service to go towards our adoption!  Like the free car washes you see - but donations are welcome!   Even donations for the orphanage are welcome!  We are wanting to take markers, calculators, soccer balls, jump ropes, etc. to give them when we arrive.

We are truly touched by everyone who has helped us and continues to help us in this process!  We have such great friends and family.

Hopefully I have travel news soon.

Everyone has a hero, right?~  Well it just so happens that Ezra gets to live with his hero.. Ethan!  He wants to do everything that Ethan is doing.  Good thing Ethan is such a good kid.  Ez had to help Ethan clean the bathrooms.  Ethan was so great to teach him the ropes.

8 means scouts mom, duh!

Our big gift to Ethan for his super awesome 8th birthday was his cub scout gear.  Man, they sure do know that you'll buy it no matter the price, don't they?!  I didn't realize just how excited Ethan was for scouts until he got his 'scout costume' on.  He even asked me, "Mom, don't you want to take my picture in my new scout stuff?!"  Of course I did.  I am the proudest mom ever.  He's already earned his Bobcat.  A big moment for a new scout!

Ethan's 8!

How in the world did this happen?!  My baby is 8 years old!  He was so excited to be so old..  He had several parties. This party is the only one I actually took pictures at.  I don't know what is happening to me!  I did take video of the others.  He invited his grandparents and one family of his cousins over for Birthday Pie.  The next party was on his actual birthday and that was just with his family.  He was excited to actually have his brother's bring him their gifts!  The last party is exactly that - his last party!  He invited his friends over.  Somehow the numbers multiplied and we ended up with 16 little boys over here.. plus my kids!  It was so loud I couldn't hear Ezra crying, and I was holding him!

The candles had little sparkler things in them that made Ethan a little nervous.  He really liked the "8" candle though.  He's wanted a number candle for a long time.
Ezra was pretty excited about the 'fire candles.'  They re-lit a few times so he got his chance.  Ethan was taken by surprise when he had to make his wish.
Yay!  We did it!  Ezra gets pretty excited about candles.
What a handsome 8 year old!
This is it.. my only picture of our 'family only' party.  We had a good time.  Happy Birthday my sweet angel Ethan.  I sure love you and wish you the best year 8 ever!  You certainly deserve all the best!

Adoption News~

I'm not sure why but I've been hesitant to post much on our upcoming adoption, but I'd better start or I'll be too behind to even start catching up.  I suppose I'll start this first adoption post with a time line of events..

July 2010
We decided to revisit adopting another child.  We learned that LDS family services changed their policy to no longer allow families to adopt more than 3 children.  Devastating news for our plan to try adopting again.

October 17, 2010
We were invited to attend a meeting with an organization called Save-A-Child by some friends in our ward.  They had heard that we were thinking about looking further into adopting from other channels.  They were hosting a 14 year old girl coming from the Ukraine and told us that there were a lot of kids that were coming here and we should come and try to become a 'host family.'  The ages of the children coming were much higher than we had ever considered for adoption, but it was my birthday and we decided to get out with them and just go for fun.. The children arrived on October 22nd late at night.

October 23, 2010

The first activity for the visiting children was at a swimming pool.  We had been invited to come to the activities to get to meet and know some of the children and just to be 'a back up hosting family.'  That day was extremely cold and rainy and we decided not to take Mason or Ezra out in the rain to go swimming.  We still were unsure about this whole thing and were not even considering pursuing anything more than attending the activities.  Ethan was so excited until we got there then he really clammed up.  I was about to leave when some of the host mom's came to talk to me and point out a few of the kids.  One girl was pointed out to me and I immediately fell in love with her.  I literally had my heart jump from my chest and beg me to go get her.  I texted Spencer that we had to apply for passports because it looked like we were going to the Ukraine.  His only response to me was, "come again?"  then, "you're serious, aren't you?"

October 23 - November 1st, 2010

We continued going to the activities in hopes that she would be there and that we could catch a glimpse of her.  She actually seemed interested in us and definitely noticed us and recognized us there.  Spencer immediately knew that this was what we needed to do for our family almost as instantly as I did after seeing her.  In fact, after meeting with the adoption agent we would eventually use, we left and drove home just in a panic over how we could come up with the money to actually do this.  We both decided that either we had to walk away and just let it go, or plan on going and figure it out as things progressed.  Our decision was to continue with the adoption.  In these few weeks we made every effort to attend all of the activities where we could just be around her.  The only time we met her one on one was the night before the group was leaving to return to the Ukraine.  She asked if I would be coming to the airport to see them off and of course I said I was!  She hugged me goodbye and I told her we were coming to see her.

Nov - Now!

We immediately applied for our immigration for foreign adoption.. the I-600A form.  We started our home study process and applied for passports.  We got a lot done really fast and were able to have our paperwork waiting in line for the our papers to be considered in Ukraine.  It really feels inadequate stating all of that in 2 sentences!!  It was A LOT of work!  It took a TON of time and a TON of money!  After all of our immigration was back we started our dossier.  That was another month of long days running errands and collecting paperwork.  Thank you by the way to all of people who helped me with that enormous task!

We got word that our submission date for our paperwork is February 7th.  They will review everything and give us our appointment date at that meeting.  We should find out sometime next week when they want us there.  We've been told that we should expect to travel the last week of February.  Now we have another huge list of things to get done.  The biggest hurdle right now is coming up with the cash that we need to take with us on our trip and our final payment to our adoption agency.. o yeah, and our plane tickets and travel expenses!  Whew, it sure sounds impossible today, but we are hopeful it all comes together in the next 2 weeks!
